Ahead of World Food Safety Day on June 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its 2026 estimates on foodborne diseases. The report reveals that unsafe food causes approximately 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths globally each year, underscoring an urgent need to strengthen global food safety barriers.

Assessing 42 major foodborne hazards between 2000 and 2021, the report highlights that children under five are disproportionately affected. Despite making up only 9% of the global population, they account for nearly one-third of all foodborne illnesses. Furthermore, while biological hazards cause the majority of illnesses, chemical contaminants—predominantly inorganic arsenic and lead—account for a staggering 73% of foodborne fatalities, significantly elevating the risks of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that this comprehensive assessment will enable governments to prioritize necessary actions to protect public health.
