A major Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak linked to contaminated eggs has sickened 236 people across Belgium, with cases spanning from February 2025 to May 2026. Patients ranged from infants under one year to seniors aged 96, underscoring the indiscriminate danger of Salmonella contamination in the food supply chain.
The Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) traced the contamination to Laerco BV, a poultry farm where Salmonella was detected in poultry house dust samples. Genetic analysis confirmed the strain matched those isolated from patients. In response, FASFC imposed strict measures including supervised production, restricted flock access, mandatory facility disinfection, and — critically — thermal treatment (pasteurization) of all eggs before market release.
The outbreak extended beyond Belgium's borders, with affected eggs distributed to France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands via the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), triggering multinational recalls.

This outbreak illustrates a persistent challenge in food safety: traditional Salmonella culture methods require 2–3 days — a delay that allows contaminated products to reach consumers, trigger recalls, and damage brand reputation. By the time results are available, products may already be on shelves across multiple countries.
For egg producers, poultry processors, and food manufacturers, the ability to detect Salmonella within hours rather than days is not just a convenience — it is a competitive and public health imperative.
FSTest offers a breakthrough solution with the FSTest 21201 Salmonella Rapid Test Kit (Lateral Flow) — a qualitative immunochromatographic assay designed for fast, on-site detection of Salmonella spp. in food, water, and environmental samples.
Rapid Results in 10–15 Minutes
After a short enrichment step, results appear in under 15 minutes — ideal for time-sensitive decisions at production lines, inspection stations, and outbreak investigations.
Accurately detects as low as 1–10 CFU/g or mL, suitable for critical food safety applications where even trace contamination cannot be tolerated.
Includes test cassettes, diluent, enrichment broth, pipettes, and instructions — no special equipment or laboratory infrastructure required.
Clear T-line indicates positive, C-line ensures test validity. No interpretation training required — anyone can perform the test with confidence.
No cross-reaction with E. coli, Vibrio, Bacillus cereus, or other common non-Salmonella organisms. Results you can trust.
Minimal sample prep, no plating, no culturing, no advanced instrumentation. Just enrich, dilute, drop, and read.
Store at 2–25°C with an 18-month shelf life. Perfect for both laboratory settings and field deployment.

The FSTest kit is ideally suited for the scenarios exposed by this outbreak:
Egg & Poultry Screening
Rapid pre-shipment testing of eggs and poultry products, preventing contaminated batches from leaving the facility.
Environmental Monitoring
On-site detection of Salmonella in poultry house dust, equipment surfaces, and processing facilities — the exact contamination vector identified in the Laerco BV case.
Import/Export Inspection
Fast clearance at border checkpoints, reducing detention time and ensuring compliance with destination market standards.
Recall Verification
Rapid confirmation of contamination during outbreak investigations, accelerating root cause analysis and corrective action.
